Markleysburg, PA (September 11) Jamie Lathroum from Mechanicsville, MD was the winner of the 13th Annual King of the Knob event at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex on Saturday night. He earned $5,000 for his winning drive in the event sanctioned by the UFo Race Championship.
Four qualifying heats were run for the 37 car field. Doug Horton was the winner of Heat 1 from the second starting position. Greg Fetters took the win in Heat 2, from the pole position. Heat 3 went to Jeremy Miller from sixth starting spot. From seventh on the grid, Jamie Lathroum advanced to win Heat 4. Two B-Mails were run, and were won by Matt Gaston and Tim Senic.
The draw for starting positions for the annual King of the Knob Championship race found Chuck Clise and Doug Horton getting front row positions for the Area 51-lap UFo event. Clise took the lead from the start, holding off the challenge of Horton. The first of the four caution periods in the 51-lap race came on lap 8, when Scott Rhodes rolled to a stop with suspension damage. The field was bunched for the restart, but the caution flew immediately as Keith Jackson slowed with problems. Back to racing, Horton got a good run at Clise and made the pass to take the lead on lap 9. The next caution came with 14 laps complete, when Tim Senic spun on the front stretch. On this attempted restart, Clise and Matt Gaston tangled to trigger a multi-car incident. This caution period would be the final one of the event. Eighth starting Jamie Lathroum had worked his way up to second at this point, and on the restart he forged past Horton to become the new leader on lap 15. Tenth starting Jared Miley settled into second, with ninth starting Jeremy Miller right behind in third. Past halfway, the leaders were battling race traffic with each other. As the laps were winding down, Lathroum's car started smoking. But he made it to the checkered flag to take the win over Miley and Miller. From 20th starting spot, Doug Dodd charged forward to finish fourth, and earned the Pass-Maximum award, presented by Bernheisel Race Components and Lazer Chassis. Jared Hawkins was fifth, after starting 12th. L.C. Powers advanced from 22nd to finish sixth, as Jack Pencil, Greg Fetters, Chad McClellan, and Horton rounded out the top ten.
Chad McClellan was able to build on his point lead in the UFo Race Championship point standings. His lead in the Series points was two points entering the night of racing. Despite having to run a backup car in the main event, he was helped by the fact that his main challengers in the points, Keith Barbara and John Mollick, both needed provisional starting spots in the main, giving them no chance to earn additional points. His lead is now 19 points over Barbara, with Mollick 12 points behind Barbara in third. Tommy Beck is fourth in points, with Danny Mitchell, Jared Miley, Doug Horton, Jared Hawkins, Chuck Harper, and Jim Kutas filling the top ten. Two races remain in the 2010 UFo Race Championship. The next event will be on Saturday, September 18, at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, for the running of the annual Pittsburgher, with the winner of the 66-lap event set to earn $7,000. The UFo season concludes on Friday and Saturday, October 8 and 9, as The Ultimate finds a new home at Roaring Knob.
